Ever wonder why we count in groups of tens, why there are 360 0 in a circle or how we came to understand irrational numbers? Can you identify the famous mathematicians pictured here? How did the ideas of number, algebra and calculus develop? In this course, participants trace the historical development of a major mathematics concept of their choice and share their findings with the entire class. Participants analyze the nature of mathematics, as well as develop content and process knowledge. The historical development of mathematics in general is also discussed. This class is a must for all teachers of mathematics at any level because they are the carriers of mathematical culture and mathematics without its history is mathematics as if it were dead!

Title: Inquiry-based Rates, Ratios, Percents and Proportions: Secondary
Instructor(s): Sally Heberlein
Target Audience: upper elementary, middle and high school math teachers, special education teachers and staff, secondary counselors and administrators

This class will explore the Measurement, Number & Operation, and the Process Standards as they relate to the 7 th grade MathScape unit, Buyer Beware, as the primary text. In this unit, participants will investigate ways to use “relative numbers” (rates, ratios, percents, and proportions) to make fair comparisons and informed decisions. The major goals of this class are learning how to best implement the MathScape units, strengthening your content knowledge and preparing you to teach these units into the classroom. Discussion of other issues relating to classroom implementation and student work will also take place.

Title: Relearning to Teach Arithmetic: Addition, Subtraction, Multipliction and Division
Instructor: Nancy Ward
Dates: June 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30 Tue. -Thur. ( 8:00-1:00 )
Location: Numeracy Office/Valley View
This professional development course guides teachers to think critically about students' comprehension of arithmetic. Participants view and discuss video segments and then work on related math problems and discussion questions. The videos first focus on students as they demonstrate and explain to their teachers and classmates how they have solved problems involving whole-number computation. The videos then include narration and a number of interviews with teachers who offer their perspectives on the kinds of learning environments that support students as they build their understanding of concepts related to addition and subtraction.

Although addition and subtraction are a focus of the primary grades, and multiplication and division receive more emphasis in grades 3 and 4, it is recommended that teachers from all the elementary grades work through both courses together. By learning about computation across the grades, we are better able to understand how these ideas develop, how they are connected, and how the range of students in a classroom develop an understanding of whole number computation.

Specifically designed for Elementary Teachers in Grades K-6, and Special Education Teachers who work with students on mathematics. Also open to administrators.

Class Limit: 20

RAPID CITY TEACHERS WILL BE GIVEN FIRST PREFERENCE. OTHERS WILL BE ADMITTED AS SPACE ALLOWS
