It is also designed to raise awareness of common student misconceptions and to deepen teachers' knowledge of effective instructional practices.
This course counts towards the Math Specialist endorsement.

Title: ED 641: UNDERSTANDING STUDENT THINKING IN NUMBERS & OPERATIONS
(Formerly named: Cognitively Guided Instruction in Math: CGI I and CGI II Combined)
Instructor: Kim Clark
Target Group: Grades K-5 teachers who teach mathematics and Special Education staff
Available Credit: 2 BHSU undergraduate or graduate credit; 30 CEU hours/ 30 C.E. credits/Audit
Dates: January 19, 26, Feb. 2, 9, 16, 23, March 9, 16, 23, 30, 2010

Optional Materials Fee: The text, Children’s Mathematics will be provided for use during this class. Participants are encouraged to purchase a personal copy. Cost is $25.00.

Description: This course is designed to assist teachers in using research-based knowledge about children’s mathematical thinking to guide instruction. Participants will learn by watching, discussing, and reflecting on how students solve mathematical problems. Activities include study of a structured framework of mathematics and how children’s thinking evolves through the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
This course counts towards the Math Specialist endorsement.

Title: ED 601: FOUNDATIONS AND ISSUES OF MATHEMATICS EDUCATION
Instructors: Vicki Kapust & Sharon Rendon
Target Group: Grades K-12 mathematics teachers & special education staff
Available Credit: 2 BHSU graduate credits/2 SD Recertification credits/30 C.E. credits/Audit

Description: This course provides an introduction to K-12 mathematics content and process standards, makes the case for using an inquiry-oriented approach in classrooms, and looks at current research. Participants will gain an understanding of the components needed to create a learning environment that encourages and supports all children in building understanding, making connections, reasoning, and solving problems as described in Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
This course counts towards the Math Specialist Endorsement.

Title: ED 671: ASSESSMENT FOR SCHOOL MATHEMATICS

Instructor: Micheline Hickenbotham
Target Group: grades K-12 mathematics teachers & special education staff
Lane Change Status: all certified staff
Available Credit: 2 BHSU graduate credits/30 CEU hours/30 C.E. credits/Audit

This course is open to K-12 teachers interested in the MSCI & K-12 Math Specialist or PRIME Professional Development course work. The course will enable participants to assess what K-12 students know, what they can do, how they think mathematically, and what their attitudes are toward mathematics. Participants will examine and explore current assessment practices are examined and new assessment systems. The course also provides opportunities to design assessments, evaluation tools, and analyze students work.

This course counts towards the Math Specialist endorsement and is appropriate for both elementary and secondary educators.

Title: RELEARNING TO TEACH ARITHMETIC: ADDITION, SUBTRACTION, MULTIPLICATION, & DIVISION

Instructors: Deb Gilliland/Stacie Tschetter
Target Group: grades K-7 teachers & special education staff
Lane Change Status: all certified staff
Available Credit: 2 BHSU undergraduate or graduate credits/30 CEU hours /30 C.E. credits/Audit
Date: June 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 2010
Time: 8:00am – 4:00pm
Location: Valley View Elementary, Mathematics Office

This course guides teachers to think critically about students' comprehension of arithmetic. Participants view and discuss video segments of students solving arithmetic problems, analyze student work, and personally solve related math problems. Discussions focus on students as they demonstrate, record, and explain how they solve problems involving whole-number computation. Consideration is given to learning environments that support students as they build their understanding of concepts related to addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

By learning about computation across the elementary grades, participants will understand how these ideas develop over time, how they are connected, and how students acquire an understanding of whole-number computation.

Title: ED 611:  ALGEBRAIC REASONING FOR K-12 EDUCATORS

Instructor: Marie Ritten
Target Group: grades K-12 mathematics teachers & special education staff
Lane Change Status: all certified staff
Available Credit: 2 BHSU graduate credits/30 CEU hours/30 C.E. credits/Audit
Date: July 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 2010

This course is designed for K-12 educators to deepen their understanding of algebraic concepts that build from kindergarten through high school. Consistent with the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the course emphasizes patterns and functions; represents and analyzes mathematical situations; uses models and symbols to represent quantitative relationships; and analyzes change. Instruction revolves around rich mathematical tasks and includes explicit attention to questioning, conjecturing, and justifying. Participants reflect on the benefits and challenges of this kind of learning environment and consider implications for their own teaching.
